Perhaps the most important volunteer position in any nonprofit organization is the Board Chair. Whereas a board chair may serve several years or only one year, that role could be THE defining moment in the life of a nonprofit. The board chair must bring energy, fresh ideas, business experience, and a community perspective. This role is not only a commitment, but a very rewarding opportunity. The chair has an opportunity to give back to an organization that has personal or professional meaning and move the organization forward in ways never considered.  The commitment and passion a board chair offers could catapult the nonprofit organization into providing higher-level services and collaborating with organizations never studied.

1.    Discuss early with the executive director what must be accomplished

2.   Review current planning documents.  Act on the priorities.

3.   Identify unique opportunities and possible headwinds.Strategize with leadership.

4.   Treat the nonprofit like a business — it is one.

5.   Be a Rainmaker. Make introductions and be a raving advocate.

6.   Model the charitable giving by making annual personal and corporate contributions early.

7.   Prepare for meaningful, engaging, and productive board meetings.

8.   Be grateful for the work and services YOUR nonprofit provides to this community.
