I recently spoke with a very effective nonprofit board chair who shared many nuggets of valuable advice. Especially significant is the suggestion that new board chairs must get over the fear of failing the organization.  Strangely, I remembered a recent conversation with a friend almost paralyzed at the thought of his upcoming service as board chair.

It is not unusual to succeed in a profession, then to be highly fearful or even terrified at leading a nonprofit board. There is, however, a solution: We can either avoid situations that make us uncomfortable, or we can prepare for the role. Here are:

Five Highly Effective Ways to Prepare to Serve as Nonprofit Board Chair:

1.    Check your passion level

You will only be as effective as your true passion for the organization’s mission. Ask yourself why you feel so strongly about the organization and why you want to serve in this capacity.

2.    Be an observer of the current board chair

Observe and identify behaviors and actions you believe the current board chair offers that are effective and ineffective. Support the chair and make notes of how you can take the organization to the next level next year.

3.    Know that the board chair role is a time commitment

To be effective, the board chair must develop a strong relationship with the executive director. This takes time. Consider meeting with the executive director regularly and at as needs arise. You should plan to review agendas, priorities, progress, and headwinds.

4.    Develop a good rapport with the Executive Director

Start now establishing a good rapport and understanding of the expectations of each other’s role. Respect each other’s opinions and work together collaboratively for advancing the mission.

5.    Review the Board Members’ Letter of Commitment

A letter of commitment is a reminder of what members agreed to when they said yes to serving on the board.  Know what it says and expect everyone to abide by it.
